If it doesn't do what you are looking for with double stars then no software exist for your need. The double star database is the best out of any software. It has by far the largest and most accurate deepsky database. This isn't an opinion but objective fact.

Skytools 4 Pro Visual - is hands down no ifs ands or buts the absolute best software there is. It was purchased by the same people that make Starry Night Pro and I am worried they will &*^% it up in the future though version 7 is a solid release.

There is a desktop version for MAC but not Windows. It is primarily phone and tablet software with a UI that is conducive for that. It has great double star data, wonderful observation planning and logging. The deepsky database is great and accurate. It has almost everything needed us eyes only no camera people. Sky Safari Pro is excellent software that is the best bang for the buck. It doesn't have separation data for double stars just 10". You search for observing logs such as show all logs for globular clusters and it show 100% of the observing logs. There are bugs that were brought to their attention with version 7 that they still have not fixed. It is riddled with bugs and features that are half way implemented.

Starry Night Pro Plus - This is one of those software programs that is very close to being a beautiful prized gem but it is very half baked. I don't like TheSky compared to others out there. This also makes it difficult to choose which NGC205 to leave your observing log under as there are several entries. Depending on your catalog selections, you may see multiple symbols for the same object. The deepsky database is not fully cross indexed. It is way over priced for those of us with two eyes and a dob and a feature set that is lacking for us. TheSky X Pro - It is very good for astrophotography and this is who it targets. There are 4 software programs that I use. Here are my opinions from the perspective of a visual observer. I have been an avid astroware user since the mid 90's and I have used them all, except for the astrophoto only software. Many people have said they are quite happy running the Android version on Windows. I know Tim did use some sophisticated software to try to display motor bodies correctly. Not actually sure how accurate Himalia's position is. It does (optionally) show a grid on planet surfaces.Ĥ. It uses the 6th Orbit Catalog to display the current PA and separation of double stars.ģ. It displays the WDS info on double stars.Ģ. SkySafari does most of what you are looking for.ġ. I know you want this to run on Windows, but you might consider the Android version of SkySafari running under the Bluestacks emulator on Windows.
In fact, the first version we wrote was called SkyVoyager. My SkySafari co-author, Tim Debenedictus, was working on Voyager when we decided to write SkySafari for iPhone back in 2010. It is basically abandonware and if you have any issues, they most likely will never be fixed. I would really stay away from Carina's Voyager. The main issue is that I am observing with an altazimuth alignment, so the position angle is constantly rotating. SkyTools isn't a planetarium application, so what planetarium applications show Sirius B? Sirius B is missing from Stellarium, KStars, and Starry Night. So probably not a good choice for the double-star observer. If Sirius B is missing, I would imagine that other double stars might be missing as well. Simulation Curriculum technical support confirms that Sirius B is missing from Starry Night Pro 8. It has a lot of eye candy, but is not for serious observing (IMO). Given the kinds of detailed questions you are asking, I'm not sure Starry Night would satisfy you. This is not plotted in the chart as far as I know. I'm not a big user of Starry Night so it is entirely possible I've missed something, but I don't think so.Īs far as plotting separations and PA, I think that is in the Info on the objects. I just zoomed in on Sirius in Starry Night and I don't see a Sirius B plotted.
